American Manganese hopes to benefit from battery market
American Manganese, developing the Artillery Peak mine in Arizona, said on Thursday it tasked a Canadian research company to evaluate the production of lithium-manganese oxide (LMD), used in batteries that can be recharged in two minutes.
British Columbia-based Kemetco Research would do “proof of concept” testing for LMD using ore from Artillary Peak.
Batteries using LMD are low-cost, safer, and have a higher output than other lithium ion products, TSX V-listed American Manganese said in a statement.
American Manganese said that the University of Illinois has made an advanced prototype battery, using LMD that can be recharged in as little as two minutes, the time equivalent of filling a car’s tank.
“The company is positioned to take a leading role in providing products to the emerging
rechargeable battery
market,” said CEO Larry Reaugh.
The battery market has been expanding with the re-emergence of electric cars, as researchers work to increase capacities and extend the range per charge in electric vehicles.
